Rock Band Roadie: Encore

September 2, 2008

Hello again,

The tour has now ended and we are back at headquarters in New Jersey putting all the Rock Band gear back in the warehouse to be stored for a future tour. Most of the crew is already home with their friends and family or headed out for their next tour adventure. Touring with Rock Band on Crüe Fest tour has been awesome. Everyone from the fans to the tour crews totally rocked. All of the bands were down to earth and appreciated how lucky we all are to have jobs full of music and fun. For myself, I’m headed out for a week with a different band then waiting for the phone to ring to start all over again. It was a great journey; I hope you enjoyed the ride!

Being a part of the Rock Band tour on Crüe Fest lead to some once in-a-life-time experiences, like when I met Tommy Lee for the first time or when I realized that Jacoby from Papa Roach knew my name. There were times that I saw and heard things that might have ended up on TMZ or People Magazine. The bus surfing incident in Chicago ended up in the MF’er of the Year video and so did the exploding drum kit from another show, which I have a signed piece of that kit in my suitcase! I have tons of pictures with some of the best Rock Band stars across the country who taught me a thing or two about the game. I am looking forward to getting my Rock Band set up at home and rocking out with my friends.

Night after night, the bands rocked, the crowd roared and the crew built a sick rock show. We had 12 trucks and 11 buses, each housing specific parts to make this tour a huge success. I made a lot of friends that I’ll never forget and a lot of memories that I’ll treasure. On top of all of that, we made history! The first Crüe Fest and the first Rock Band/Rock Show tour are complete. I’m sure there will be many more to come!

See you next time,

Rock Band Roadie: Madison, WI

August 20, 2008

Hello All,

I am enjoying a day off in Madison, WI. We had a show last night in Winnipeg, wrapping up our week in Canada. It’s a 20 hour drive from Winnipeg to Cincinnati, OH where our next show will be taking place so we’ve stopped in Wisconsin to let everyone recharge before we make the rest of the journey.

The Rock Band Second Stage Experience truck didn’t make the trip to Canada but we set up the Backstage VIP Lounge. We did have some fans, the Rock Band crew, and some of Mötley’s crew rockin’ out backstage, but I missed watching the 40 year old dudes/dads get up in front of the crowd with their kids and ROCK.

We spent a lot of time hanging outside the bus during shows, getting some fresh, summer, Canadian air. And, of course, I went shopping.

The catering in Canada was unfortunately hit or miss, but we always knew that there was food available…it is kind of like being in college, some days you get that really good homemade lasagna and some days you have questionable fish sticks.

I can’t believe there are only a few shows left. This tour has been a blast and right when I am getting good at Rock Band, it’s time to pack up for the summer. It has been awesome to see all of the rock and roll fans play and rock out all across the country. I’ll let you know how the last couple of shows turn out.

Later,
RBR

Rock Band Roadie: Chicago

July 25, 2008

Howdy Everyone,

We are now in Texas for a day off and the tour is in full swing. We have already traveled up the east coast, into Canada, and back down through IL, WI, and MO. I haven’t been keeping count of shows nor have I started the tour countdown. You wouldn’t believe how days run together when you wake up on a bus in parking lot, after parking lot, and you are back in bed before the bus rolls out again. When we arrive at a venue there is always something that “rings a bell” and you realize that you have been there before but you still don’t know what city you are in at the moment. Eventually, though, you pass the day’s itinerary posted on the bus or one of the local staff mentions the city name and you know for sure where you are spending that day.

I saw something funny the other day, I think in Chicago. I was having a conversation backstage, just doing my daily thing, when I heard police sirens in the distance. Then they were getting louder…in the parking lot maybe? This doesn’t happen every day so I had to see what was going on. As I turned to check it out, the gates to the backstage opened and one of the band member’s buses was approaching with the cops right on their tail. I looked up to see one band member (who shall remain nameless, must protect the not-so-innocent) “bus surfing” to the displeasure of the local law enforcement. Yes kids, he was riding on top of his bus like he was on a board in Maui! When they parked, he climbed down the ladder and all was good (nobody got arrested), but I had to pass that one on.

See you at Crüe Fest!

Rock Band Roadie: Crüe Fest Portland, OR

August 13, 2008

Hey Guys,
We’ve been on the West coast for a while now…and I’m LOVING it here, especially the weather. You know I love to shop, so this was a good excuse to buy a new jacket for the cool evenings. Today the crew and I are in Portland, OR. Tonight we are heading into Canada, I am pretty excited to venture into another country. Once we get to Canada, I’ll be in radio silence for awhile so I want to get you up to speed.

We’ve been in 20 states and 30 cities all across the country. It has been so fun rockin’ in all of the different venues and towns. Yesterday we downloaded the new DLC Crüe Fest pack in the Rock Band VIP Lounge; all I can say is W-O-W. Today we had our first go-around with the new tracks and they are awesome. One of the bands featured in the DLC pack tried their song for the first time on Rock Band. They drew a pretty good crowd, but unfortunately didn’t fair so well on their own song. I thought this would be encouraging for all of you Rock Band lovers that have failed out your first time. The best and probably funniest part about the band failing on their own song is that there were several fans that played the entire song and did awesome!

Our first stop when we get back to the states is Ohio. Hope to see you there!

Rock Band Roadie: SF Day Off

August 7, 2008

Hello All,
I am sitting at the Sleep Train Amphitheatre outside of Sacramento, CA after two glorious days off in San Francisco. It wasn’t my first time in San Fran, but it was my first time to get to walk around and see stuff. I walked up & down Lombardo Street while I talked to my mom on the phone. I had no idea what exactly I was seeing, but I enjoyed the California sights while my mom caught me up on things at home.

The second day is when we hit the tourist scene. You see, as a roadie, you get to travel from city to city and state to state, but sometimes all you get to see is the inside of every venue. That’s why our day-off adventures are so great. It’s a chance to see the city and spend some time hanging out with the crew outside of work.

It is almost like a vacation; all of us go out together and do some “touristy” stuff, like hat shopping at a place called Goodish Brothers and walking around Pier 39. We also stayed near the Fisherman’s Wharf close to a lot of great restaurants. We waited until late to have dinner at a great sushi/Thai joint we found in Chinatown. After a spicy tuna roll, some edamame, a seaweed salad and yellow tail, I was ready to roll myself into bed. I always believe a good spicy tuna roll is kind of like a good turkey dinner – puts you right to sleep…zzzz.

The next morning I woke up and realized I was almost out of clean underwear! Thankfully, we can send our laundry out to be done and I didn’t have to spend half my day washing clothes. That is one of the best perks of the road because I HATE DOING LAUNDRY. I got to sleep half the day away and woke up to walk around town for the other half – saw nothing special this time, yet the day was very enjoyable. Now it’s back to work. We are headed up the West coast, then on to Canada.

Rock Band Roadie: Crüe Fest Tampa, FL

July 6, 2008

Hey Guys,

Day Two was Tampa, FL. Well actually show two, day two was a day off at the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa; I highly suggest the poolside cabanas. Back to show two. The seven day forecast called for rain every day. On our day off, rain it did indeed! I really thought that the hotel might float away and was hoping that my seat cushion could be used as a floatation device, just in case. The day of Crüe Fest started nice enough. You have to love cool Florida mornings, just the feeling of the humidity building in the air. We got our truck parked, decided where our VIP Tent was going to be set up, and we were off to the races by 7:30 AM. By mid-morning we were back in the rain, typical for Florida but a pain for tours. Thankfully it stopped and our show went on.

Day four was the Fourth of July and I got to drive the bus for a while, I guess if you’re up you might as well take your turn on the big rig. We got to Charlotte, NC mid-afternoon and Miss Robin and I went shopping. Robin is the only female on the Rock Band crew. She can definitely hang with the boys but likes her shopping. Okay, shopping is my downfall too. If you put me close to a good shopping center money is going to be spent and new clothes are going to be packed in my already overstuffed bag. Everyone knows that a man needs things and since I am on the road so much, I miss time with family and friends so I buy myself gifts to keep me happy.

It is dinner time and there is a Japanese steakhouse across the street we are heading to for sushi and shrimp so I’m getting out of here.

More Fun to Come,
RBR

Rock Band Roadie: Crüe Fest West Palm Beach, FL

July 2, 2008

Hello Again,

First impressions have to be good and WOW, did Crüe Fest have a huge first impression on me. Truck after truck dumped its contents on the dock at the Cruzan Amphitheatre and by the time it ended, the dock and stage were packed and the show was ready for a production rehearsal. Truss, lights, speakers, video, pyrotechnics, amps, and drum kits, unbelievable. Once everything was flown, positioned, and plugged in, Mötley Crüe did a full run through of the show. All I have to say is ear plugs and fire extinguishers. There is no question, Mötley Crüe is still the real deal and has not missed a beat.

Show day numero uno came without warning (except for the three preproduction days and a month of planning). All three days in West Palm had been muggy but it wasn’t until show day, close to time for the doors to open, that the rain came. And rain it did! Everything for the main stage was covered but our Rock Band 2nd Stage Experience and the practice tent were less than covered…luckily we were able to save the electronics. Once the rain subsided, the competition on the 2nd Stage ran from 4-7 PM and gave us our first of many winners to perform on the main stage. After Buckcherry’s sick performance, we set up Rock Band on the main stage. The Rock Band winners entertained the crowd with their best performance until it was time for Crüe to take stage and rock out with their (well, you know) out.

Since this was the first show, we got to the amphitheater early from our luxurious hotel and we were working by 7:15 AM. Once the day finally came to an end, we watched our last truck being locked at 3:30 AM (yes, the following day). Let me tell you, the Rock Band Roadie has seen his share of 21 hour days but before you feel too sorry for me, I have to tell you that the Production Crew saw the three hours that I missed while I slept and they continued to work. Thank God for the bus drivers who slept soundly all day in their hotel rooms so we could sleep soundly on our way to Tampa.

Good Night,
RBR

PS. Here we are on the second of these blogs and I am already too lazy to type “Rock Band Roadie”

Rock Band Roadie: On the Road in Texas

July 24, 2008

It has been a few days since I’ve had a chance to sit at my computer. We are now in Texas for a day off and the tour is in full swing. Rock Band Roadie: Crüe Fest

June 27, 2008

Hello All,

Rock Band Roadie on the Crüe Fest Tour here. I’m going to be keeping you up to date with the roadie life, happenings, and maybe a joke or two along the way. Roadies are like carnies with more music and fewer stuffed animals.

Just a little background on me, I’ve been touring for 9 years and I love it, each day delivers new problems and challenges, with the same catering and schedules. I try to tour 45+ weeks a year to continue making the magic happen. I have toured with all different types of artists from country to rock to reggae but Crüe Fest is the ultimate in tours: Mötley Crüe along with Buckcherry, Papa Roach, SIXX: A.M., and Trapt.

The Rock Band Crew and I all live on a 45’ Prevost bus with 11 other people including the tour video crew and the merchandise girl. The driver, who is supposed to sleep all day so he can drive all night (but we won’t get into that), also shares our home. Our bus has twelve bunks, 4 sections of bunks stacked three high, kind of like coffins with a pillow and blanket. Although we have comforts like satellite TV and internet, we don’t have necessities like showers and privacy. We are trying to be one big happy family but just like the Brady Bunch, sometimes even Marcia gets her feelings hurt.

Our days either begin in a hotel or in an amphitheater parking lot. If we came in from a day off, we leave our hotel in time to get to the venue by 7:00 AM or so. If we are coming straight from another show, we wake up in the parking lot and begin afresh with a shower and coffee from catering. There are 11 or 12 buses and 7 semi trucks on this tour, including our Rock Band truck.

Our journey started almost a month before the first show when the Rock Band crew flew to the warehouse in Robbinsville, NJ to prepare. We spent a few weeks there building the truck, getting everything together, getting to know each other and our positions on the crew. Once we were all acquainted, we spent our first Rock Band experience at the Jersey Shore celebrating the summer solstice with Stride. It was ridiculously long lasting from 5:30am to 9pm. After the long day of rocking out, we headed to Orlando for a few days before continuing to West Palm Beach for the rehearsal days and the kick off show.

Stay tuned for more stories from the road,

Rock Band Roadie
